Wood and Concrete Kitchen and Living Room in Reading

This project in Sonning Common, Reading is a modern, open-plan kitchen and living area. The design was formed by the client's desire for an industrial touch with a sleek, stylish aesthetic that would fit into their existing home. By combining concrete and wood textures, we achieved this look and feel.

  • The furniture in the kitchen and living areas follows the same colour scheme as the walls, which allows for a seamless transition between rooms. The only difference is the handles, with the kitchen furniture being handleless and the living furniture having sleek black handles to match the black and oak open-shelf units.

We decided that Nobilia's Line-N handleless Riva Concrete Slate Grey cabinets would be perfect for the base and tall units. In contrast, the wall units are in Sanremo Oak, which matches the chunky 100mm breakfast bar. We also used a matching concrete-effect laminate on the worktops, cladding, and windowsill for a cohesive look.

The appliances in the kitchen are mostly Siemens, including the oven, induction hob, fridge-freezer, washing machine, and microwave. Meanwhile, the dishwasher is from Neff, the inset Rock Grey sink is from Silgranit, and the canopy extractor fan is from Elica.

The client wanted to maximise the space in his living room and do away with the standard bookshelf he had previously. The resulting design is a clever combination of furniture and storage that allows for plenty of room for books and other items, as well as a stunning piece of furniture that is both functional and beautiful.

The hoover is cleverly hidden in the tall, suspended unit that sits between the two wood open-shelf units. To complete the look, we added cladding made with a large slab of Sanremo Oak behind the hanging metal shelf.
